Furniture
This piano bench was built during the spring and fall of 2022, created while taking Woodworking and Furniture I and II at George Mason University.
The design was inspired by the 1930s art deco sunburst designs, as I had moved into a house built in the 1930s that features several arches and wanted to take elements inspired by the streamlined curves and geometric shapes found in art deco design.
The bench includes functional storage where I can store my music.
The main body and lid is built out of plywood, mahogany along the outside of the lid and accents at the bottom of the bench, ash legs, and a variety of woods for the inlay starburst. The inlay details on the top were cut using a laser cutter and pieced together and adhered by hand. The piano keys on the sides of the bench were engraved with the laser cutter and hand painted, and the piano keys on the top were cut and scored on white wood inlay and the black keys were hand painted.
